Background: In recent years, there has been widespread exploratory works on Mannar island looking for heavy metals in the coastal sands. If permits are authorised for mining to progress this is expected to have a hugely detrimental impact on the environment and local community.

Role: We are looking for a volunteer with experience in mining, the environment or sustainability to help research the issue and run a campaign to raise awareness of the potential problems and influence local and political authorities.
