A Collective Vision

Higher Soul Films is a film production company that focuses on the conceptualisation, development, production, and post-production of short films, feature films and documentaries. Kavi Varman (director): “Our vision is to establish a vibrant film industry in Mannar, Northern Sri Lanka, and as part of that, to nurture emerging talent.” Kavi Varman is the brainchild behind this venture and leads a passionate team of youngsters keen to embrace the more healthy parts of the film industry.

Our Specialisation

“We are different. While the typical diet of films glorify action, violence, drug taking and melodramatic outpouring of emotion, we are dedicated to a higher ambition. Our goal is to create high-quality, art house films that broaden one’s appetite for more thought-provoking ‘message’ based content that will challenge, inspire and nurture healthy life aspirations.”

Another World

For outsiders not living in Mannar, these films give people a window into life in a remote part of Sri Lanka and the challenges being faced by a younger generation wanting to make a positive contribution to the world.

Our Films Thus Far

Yaavarum Kezhir - translated as “Here Ye Here Ye” (2023)

Much to our surprise and delight, our first short film, Yaavarum Kezhir (Hear Ye, Hear Ye), on the theme of drugs, took out First Prize in the Kuviyam Media National Short Film Competition for Best Director, Best Cinematographer, and Best Film. The film was shot on a second-hand iPhone 7, using local amateur actors. This achievement affirmed our dream and confirmed we were on the right path, propelling us into serious film action.

Karvaththirai - translated as
“Hope Torn Asunder” (2023)

Our second film, Karvaththira (Hope Torn Asunder) zooms in on Seenu, a talented but poor soccer player who lands a lucrative contract with an international team. His departure draws nigh and everything is progressing smoothly until a split second reaction undermines all his plans, with devastating consequences. The film which cautions against violence was viewed by thousands at high schools and via the internet. It was instrumental in stopping gang fights and helped to curb street violence.

Madamai Thagar – translated
as “Break the Madness” (2024)

The third short film, Madamai Thagar (Break the Madness) intertwines two stories – one about a girl who struggles to cope with life and ponders suicide and the other about the evil impact of drugs on communities. The film showcases current issues facing young people in Sri Lanka and shines a light on the values of understanding, friendship, and forgiveness in order to overcome loneliness and despair. When the film was shown last year to a packed house in the Mannar Cinema, it left many mothers and teenagers in tears of gratitude for a film that empathised so accurately with their all-too-common plight.

We were really thrilled to find out that this film won Best Director at New South Wales-based Salt House Creative International Film Festival (Australia) this year.

Call to Action

Kavi Varman: “Currently we are shooting our first feature film, Vaalarivan (Man Proposes God Disposes). The film is a set of complex, hyperlinked narratives with the overarching theme of whatever happens, even if bad, can transform into a greater good. We predict it will be a 120 minute film and we are about 20% of the way through shooting. We have a core team of five who are working with 35 actors, not counting crowd scenes. It’s a challenging project which is pushing us to the limits of our ability and capacity – and beyond. Join us on this adventure!”

  • We are a youth-managed independent film production social enterprise seeking talented actors and filmmakers to collaborate on upcoming projects. Are you interested?
  • Would you consider sponsoring current and future Higher Soul Film productions? For the current feature film, thanks to kind sponsors, we have raised AU$14,500. We need an additional AU$13,300 to complete the 120-minute film.

As a small gesture of appreciation we will include your name and country in the film credits of the film. We believe our ‘message films’ will be an inspiration for people young and old, both in Sri Lanka and overseas.
