Needed when:Now
Duration:minimum 2 weeks up to 1 year
Background: There is an abundance of wildlife in Mannar including one of the world’s most important birding habitats under the international Ramsar Convention which protect migratory birds. The rich biodiversity of Mannar is under threat from an Australian mining company that proposes to mine much of Mannar Island for ilmenite sand. The threat is also from the government’s ill-conceived wind turbine phase 2 project unheard of before its introduction. Both projects will lead to the destruction of Mannar Island and its ecological, social and economic ruin.
Role:We are looking for volunteers with knowledge and experience of animal and environmental impacts to help educate and raise awareness of its importance.
- Give presentations at schools, local gatherings, businesses and religious institutions about local environmental concerns
- Carry out research in Mannar to help build a better understanding of the local flora and fauna
